Our Mission: Riverwest Yogashala, a nonprofit yoga center, brings yoga to a diverse population, promoting strength, clarity, and overall well-being through the practice of Iyengar yoga.

108 SUN SALUTATIONS AND 7th BIRTHDAY PARTY, SUNDAY, MARCH 21, 1-6PM
Join us at a smashing birthday party at Milwaukee Friends Meetinghouse at N.. Gordon Pl. and E. Auer Ave. What better way to celebrate the spring equinox and our anniversary than an exhilarating afternoon of sun salutations? Plus potluck and birthday cake to help us celebrate our 7th year of affordable, high-quality, nonprofit yoga for everyone!

Pick up a sponsor form and ask friends and family to sponsor you 10 cents, a quarter, a dollar for each Surya Namaskar (sun salute) you complete.. Our goal is to raise $6000 to support our mission of bringing yoga to all, including neighborhood kids, the unemployed, and more. Everyone who raises $108 or more earn a commemorative silk-screened t-shirt! All participants qualify for unique, handmade door prizes.

The event also features an intro to Iyengar yoga from 1-2:30 pm, a lesson by Capoeira Angola (www.capoeirala.com) from 3:30-4:30 pm, and a potluck from 5-6 pm. We will provide rice and dal, green salad, and birthday cake. Please bring a dish to share.

The entire event is free of charge, but as a nonprofit we appreciate any and all donations to support our mission!

FIRST SUNDAY FREE CLASS, March 7, 1-2:30PM
Take a free class with Peggy Hong this month. Come one and all, but come 10-15 minutes early to get a space! Only the first 20 students will be admitted.

2010 MEMBERSHIP: REGISTER ONLINE
Now you can purchase your membership online with a credit card . Your membership helps us fulfill our mission of making Iyengar yoga accessible to all. It supports free classes, pay-what-you-can (Yoga for the Unemployed) classes, and scholarships.

So far this year, we've provided free classes to 350 students, including 130 teenagers. We gave semester scholarships to 15 students. We are the only nonprofit Iyengar yoga center in our region, and one of a few in the nation. Please help us strengthen our work! In the plans for 2010 are free prenatal yoga class, a free class for teens at Sixteenth Street Community Health Center, and a class for veterans.

Other membership benefits include access to our beautiful, fully-equipped studio when classes are not in session, and a $12 drop-in rate ($15 for nonmembers). This is the best deal in town, not to mention the benefits to your conscience! Yoga is truly meant for everyone, not just those who can afford it.

DEEPENING YOUR PRACTICE OF YOGA, PEGGY HONG
For students with 1 year minimum study of Iyengar yoga, we will go deep into asana through 3-hour workshops, followed by 1-hour discussions of readings on practice and philosophy. Come to all 4 sessions for $150 or individual sessions for $45. The workshops will meet Saturdays, 1-5pm:
January 23, Lotus in the New Year: Hip Openers
February 27, Coiling the Spine: Dorsal Spine Openers
March 20, Topsy Turvy: Confident Inverting
April 24, Forward Folding: Safe and Deep Forward Bend

YOGASHALA BOUTIQUE
New Jade eco-friendly mats are in, with many beautiful colors available. You will find them retailing for around $50 but as a nonprofit we sell them for only $30. Take advantage of our special deals. We also sell books at a minimum 10% discount, including classics such as LIGHT ON YOGA, LIGHT ON LIFE, and the new much-acclaimed Edwin Bryant YOGA SUTRAS OF PATANJALI translation. Don’t forget 2010 calendars for everyone on your list, including co-workers, neighbors, family, and friends. This is a great way to encourage loved ones to try out yoga. Even more direct encouragement are Yogashala gift certificates! Ask your teacher for details.

JOIN A COMMITTEE
As a nonprofit we are indebted to our fantastic volunteers and work-study interns. This year we are creating more ways for students to be involved. Where do your interests and talents fit in? We have a committee for every personality type.

  • Events Committee: Do you love to plan parties? Are you good at getting people together? Join the party crowd in the events committee.
  • Fundraising Committee: Nothing excites you more than raising money for a great cause. The sky's the limit with what we can accomplish together. Get together with these ambitious optimists.
  • Site Committee: Scouring real estate listings floats your boat. You love interior design, planning color schemes, carpentry, sewing, and fixing up. Join the handy men and women of the Site Committee.
  • Public Relations: You're creative with graphics and words. You have great ideas for making a splash. You love Facebook, Twitter, and innovative networking. Help us get the word out on the PR Committee.
